Nutrition is a maker and marker of sustainable development, directly or indirectly linked to all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a multi-sectoral problem, malnutrition necessitates aligned and coordinated responses across sectors and actors.

UN-Nutrition is the United Nations inter-agency coordination mechanism for nutrition. It was founded in 2020 by its five constituent members: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); the World Food Programme (WFP); and the World Health Organization (WHO). UN-Nutrition is universal in scope, working to safeguard the nutrition of all people in all countries.

UN-Nutrition accounts to Member States through the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). As a subsidiary body of ECOSOC, UN-Nutrition reports to the council on its progress on an annual basis. This helps to bridge the technical discourse − for example on food systems transformation and universal health care − in Rome and Geneva with the political discussions that unfold at the UN General Assembly in New York.

In addition, UN-Nutrition supports the monitoring of the Nutrition Decade for the United Nations General Assembly and reports to other United Nations governing bodies through its members.

The UN-Nutrition strategy will translate the synergies between the work of UN System entities into action on the ground. For this reason and because of your outstanding work over the years, UN-Nutrition is an extremely valuable part of the ECOSOC ecosystem of subsidiary bodies and UN System entities.
