The UN Nutrition Journal (UNNJ) is the annual thematic peer reviewed journal of UN Nutrition, focusing on perceived knowledge gaps and emerging nutrition issues and providing a space to exchange ideas on what works and how, and to identify innovative approaches to enable action. The 1st edition of UNNJ will focus on the theme Transforming Nutrition.
Why Transforming Nutrition?
The planet we live in is confronted with powerful and interconnected threats that challenge its own future existence. Natural resources are being used beyond sustainable boundaries; biodiversity is being very rapidly lost; climate is fast changing increasing vulnerabilities, including to new diseases as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic testimonies; conflicts, poverty and inequalities are increasing including the inequities in food and health systems; the population is growing at unsustainable rates in some areas; gender balance and solidarity – key values for humanity to thrive – are at a low ebb, with basic human rights, specially of women, being ignored, or worse, being explicitly violated; and good global governance to face it all is proving increasingly arduous to achieve. Such complex thread of threats greatly impacts people’s nutrition.
There are only 10 years left to implement the agreed 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Improving nutrition is the backbone for accelerating this achievement and in acknowledgment, world leaders proclaimed the Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025).
They called for commitments from all stakeholders around 6 action areas that should not function in silos: (1) Sustainable, resilient food systems for healthy diets; (2) Aligned health systems providing universal coverage for essential nutrition actions; (3) Social protection and nutrition education; (4) Trade and investment for improving nutrition; (5) Safe and supportive environments for nutrition at all ages; and (6) Strengthen governance and accountability for nutrition.
In its inaugural issue, UN Nutrition Journal #1 aims at enhancing the collective understanding and dialogue on the impacts of such complex thread of threats in people’s nutrition and identifying and sharing insights on what can be done concretely in the next five year of the Nutrition Decade and beyond, to counterbalance them and transform nutrition for the better.
We are now in the mid-point of the Nutrition Decade. The UN Food Systems Summit will take place in September and the Nutrition for Growth Summit will be held in December. These are major opportunities for further mobilizing commitments and collaboration for nutrition. However, more action-enabling knowledge should be generated, compiled, curated and brokered on how to ensure the interconnectivity and strong ties between the Nutrition Decade’s 6 action areas at all levels moving forwards, in particular in national programme design. This Call for Contributions to UNNJ#1 builds on this perceived knowledge gaps on how to interlink, build strong ties that leverage synergies between all Nutrition Decades action areas.
UNNJ#1 welcomes academically rigorous research studies and reviews, perspectives, and insights on what works and how and examples of new programming approaches to enable cross cutting action for transforming nutrition, to upscale implementation of the whole spectrum of multiple duty policies and programme options that simultaneously address malnutrition in all its forms, climate change and inequalities, while ensuring solutions are developed in a participatory and inclusive way and human rights are progressively realized.
Contributions are welcome from academia, researchers, programme managers, programme designers, implementers, and hands-on field teams from all over the world. UNNJ particularly encourages contributions from the various stakeholders’ groups from low- and mid-income countries.
Contributions are welcome along, but not exclusively, the following perspectives:
- What are examples of concrete actions interlinking the Nutrition Decade’s action areas that are transforming nutrition for the better?
- How can social protection be used as a transformative tool? What are examples linking up social protection, food, and health systems?
- What are examples of innovative tools and approaches for inter-sector nutrition programming and/or capacity building?
- How can transformative nutrition action be designed and implemented within new development paradigms, such as participatory economies?
- How can trade and financial investments be tapped upon and leveraged for transforming nutrition?
- What are examples or insights on embedding the human right to adequate food in laws and regulations along all action areas? ,
- What are examples of inclusive processes contributing to better nutrition by creating an enabling food environment?
- What transformative actions can strengthen good governance for nutrition at all levels to ensure safe and supportive environments that tackle inequalities?
Contributions can be submitted on the following categories:
Feature articles: 3,000 words articles related to the general topic of the publication observing the perspectives listed above. The articles will be submitted to peer review and can include conceptual contributions or original research with preference for operational studies.
Innovations: 1,500 words articles highlighting an innovative approach, technology, apps, or others that have proven or high potential capacity to transform nutrition.
Insights: 1,500 words articles with the authors’ views regarding the perspectives listed above. The section sometimes features a counterpoint by another author holding an opposite opinion to stimulate debate.
Letter to the editor: 500 words letters to the editor can be published at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.
